Wednesday Boatbuilding Update

By

Lorne Swarthout

On Wednesday the canoe building crew finally sculpted the upswept bow and stern lines of the Traveler. The canoe we are building is now looking more like the graceful, lithe craft it will be in a couple of months. The balance of Wednesday’s session was spent in smoothing out the interior. Our next step, once that is complete, will be fiberglassing the inside.
We will be working again on Sunday, 11/12 and Wednesday 12/15, from noon to 4:00. Everyone welcome to join us.

Sunday Boatbuilding Update

We put another coat of epoxy on the canoe this afternoon. It is looking shiny!
Lorne will be in on Tuesday morning (with Jean-Noel) to set the canoe up on its bottom so we can begin working on the inside. Lorne will be away for a week, beginning on Wednesday. Jean-Noel, Nancy and Peter all know what is going on and can direct work on Wednesday and Sunday.

Head of the Weir

On Saturday, October 21st, two crews, one adult and one youth, made their way to Hull, Mass to compete in the 31st Annual Head of Weir River Race, sponsored by The Hull Lifesaving Museum.

With more than 60 boats registered in 10 categories, the field was diverse and at times crowded with over 150 rowers from all over New England. The race is 5.5  miles long, beginning in the Weir River Estuary and ending on open water. The race course ran  from West Corner (on the Hingham/ Hull/ Cohasset line), past Bumpkin Island, across Hull Bay, to the museum’s Windmill Point Boathouse at Hull Gut. The Weir draws coxed youth and adult rowers in gigs, single and double livery and workboats, currachs, and ocean shells, as well as experienced kayakers. In the “head of the river” format, boats kick-off the starting line at closely-timed intervals. Despite the stiff competition, VCB’s adult crew, Cox-4 Adult, rowing Warrior won in their category. The youth crew, rowing Gold Rush came in third, only seven seconds behind the second place Sound School boat, Hoda Jane and 20 seconds behind the winner.

Boatbuilding Update

On Wednesday a large VCB volunteer crew went to work to smooth down the outside of our cedar strip canoe. All (or most of) the flats of the 3/4″ strips are becoming part of a gently rounded hull. Planes and scrapers and sandpaper and elbow grease were our tools. Happy conversation energized us.
On Sunday afternoon the canoe hull was given more vigorous sanding to turn its faceted surface into a smooth cedar skin.
Next boatbuilding sessions will be Wednesday and Sunday12:00 to 4:00

Row to Red Hook

By

Paul Caviano

It was an impressive little flotilla that took over Valentino Beach in Red Hook. VCB invaded Hometown BBQ and Steve’s Key Lime Pies, chilled out for a while, and then went to visit the Statue.  We also got to see a bit of the sailing regatta going on off Ellis Island on the homeward leg, while being guarded by the Coast Guard (see photos).

The post row chit chat at the boathouse included discussion of a possible row up to Misawa in Edgewater for poke and tempura (yes, we go where the food is!).  More to follow on that front.

Thanks again to the experienced rowers for being good hosts and role models for the newbie paddlers.

Thanks to all the VCB rowers and coxswains without whom we couldn’t have run such an outing — 4 boats and 22 rowers evenly split between VCB regulars and the Morgan Stanley dragon boat team.
