Rowers from all over the East Coast streamed into the South Shore this past Saturday to compete in the 32nd Snow Row. As the Hull Lifesaving Museum’s signature race, the Snow Row attracts a wide range of competitors to take part in one giant and chaotic competition. The launch of a tiny cannonball at Windmill Point Beach started the rowers running down to their boats to start the 3.3-mile journey. The course looped around both Sheep Island and Harrys Rock, and came back to the beach.

Before the race, Ed McCabe, director of Maritime and New Program Development at the Hull Lifesaving Museum, spoke to the rowers and coxswains. He warned that the wind would make the trek to and around Sheep Island and Harrys Rock difficult. The rowers in the 204 competing boats would get their “brains beaten up,” as McCabe put it, adding that the wind would make the trip back “a sled ride.”

VCB at Snow Row 2011

Snow Row 2011

Sally, Lissa, Dave & Karl set off from pier 40 at the crack of dawn on Friday, heading for Warren RI, where Don Betts had stored 2 gigs, Notorious GIG and Quixotic since the Icecreaker last November. We picked up the gigs and headed for Hull, with a minor delay.

Following the Snow Ball gala thrown by Hull Lifesaving Museum, we intrepid rowers spent the night at the Clarion Nantaskett Beack Resort. We met up with the Stuy and Harbor School crews in the morning, unloaded the boats and were off to the races.

The winds were predicted to be 10-15 mph but felt more like 20-25. The 3.5 mile race began with all boats bow on beach, which with the wind and current and 100 boats launching simultaneously made for a chaotic LeMans style start.  It was a tough row into the wind & current to start off our rowing season.

Harbor School came in first both in the Adult Cox 4 class and Youth Cox 4. CONGRATULATIONS HARBOR SCHOOL!!!!

Folks,

There will be a BCB Board Meeting wed 03/16/11, … agenda to follow.

I don’t wanna look a ‘gift horse in the …’ but, I was a bit underwhelmed by the SNL Skit.  Although the lil gig ‘Shopacock’ earned more camera time than her sister’s appearance on ‘Nova Science Now’.  Thanks SNL, for the much needed donation!

More importantly: four crews in VCB Boats, participated in the 30th annual Snow Row in Hull, Mass.  Thankfully there was no snow, the weather crisp & sunny.

  • Sally, Lissa, Karl, Phil Shinn and Mike Zemanski and 3 other VCB crews (Stuy Rowing, Harbor School Adults, and Harbor School Youth) finished the 3 1/2 mile race.
  • Harbor School won first place position in two classes — Coxed 4 Adult and Coxed 4 Youth.
  • The VCB adults in a valiant effort rowed their hearts out but placed later.

The racetimes are posted on line – search – Hull Life Saving Museum.org – ‘Snow Row 2011′

Pictures & detail, later….
