Opening Day 2014

We had a great turn out for opening day with five boats in the water. Stuyrowing was there in force along with our usual dedicated volunteers to help get everyone into a boat and out into the river. Boats mostly stayed in the ebayment due to the combination of a strong ebb tide and winds out of the north gusting up to 20 mph. Work continues on the gig and volunteers enjoyed sanding in the sunshine in the lee of pier 40. The dory sits in the boathouse waiting for the planking crew. It was a fine opening day 2014!

Gig Delivery

The gig was moved off the strong back and into the repair bay. Many hands made light work. The next to last photo in the slideshow shows the “ballot” for naming the boat with about 30 choices, and the last shows the seven finalists with their vote totals. “Pete Seeger” seems to be the clear favorite, but it’s not over until it’s over. Rob will send around a reminder on this later in the week–in the meantime, let the lobbying begin! We’ll have a final vote next Sunday. Absentees can vote (same deal, five votes each) in advance by email, but if there’s a runoff on Sunday those present will decide.

A Gig is Born!

Work is almost completed on our new 5 plank Whitehall Gig. All we need now is a paint job and a name.
The dory keel is finished and ready to take her place on the strong back.

Snow Row 2014

From snow row 2014

New York Harbor School, Stuyvesant High School, Village Community Boathouse and the Warren Rhode Island Whirley Gigs joined forces to field three crews in the 47th annual Snow Row held by the Hull Lifesaving Museum. 86 human powered boats in 25 different categories finished the 3.5 mile open water race with times ranging from 30:39 for a surfski single to 53:49 for a coxed-4 with a mixed crew of youth and adults. Lady Moody, Don Betts’ Stretch Gunning Dory manned by a mixed crew of New Yorkers and Rhode Islanders came first in the category of Coxed-4, Amateur Adults. (Amateur is defined as never having rowed together prior to the race.) Stuyvesant High School rowing VCB’s Stretch Gunning Dory Warrior, lost an oar in a run-in with another boat as they made the turn around the island. However, they made it over the finish line with a respectable 51:12. NY Harbor School won in their category with a time of 42:43. Sound School’s Stretch Gunning Dory, First Constitution, the boat VCB still wants to beat, rowed by a professional youth crew, finished the race in 35:37.
